Czech Republic – The land of unique castles

The Czech Republic is one of the richest countries in the world when it comes to historical castles, chateaux and ruins. You can find more than two thousands of them in a relatively small area, making it one of the largest castle powers in Europe – and perhaps even in the world. The Czech castles stand out for their uniqueness and hold firsts that have no parallel in Europe or the world.
Prague Castle – the largest castle complex in the world
At the very top of castle records stands Prague Castle. This iconic symbol of the capital is officially listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest continuous castle complex in the world. It covers an area of over 70,000 square meters, was founded in the 9th century and today serves as the residence of the President of the Republic. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Karlštejn is completely unique on a European scale – it was not built as a fortress, but as a spiritual sanctuary and a safe place for storing crown jewels and holy relics.
Among the oldest castle monuments, Přimda stands out, whose Romanesque tower from the 12th century makes it the oldest preserved stone castle in Central Europe. Among the most mysterious is Houska, surrounded by dark legends – according to legend, it was built over the gate to hell. Lovers of knightly romance will be interested in Bouzov, which boasts the largest collection of knightly armour in our country and is also one of the most frequently filmed castles not only in Czech production. Unique medieval exhibitions are offered by Křivoklát, which houses one of the largest collections of torture instruments in Europe. High in the Šumava foothills stands Kašperk, the highest royal castle in Central Europe. Trosky experienced a rapid rise and fall – from its foundation in the 14th century, it took only a hundred years for it to be abandoned. And one of the rarest movable monuments in the Czech Republic is considered to be the reliquary of St. Maurus, kept in the Bečov nad Teplou castle, which also stands out for its exceptionally preserved interior decoration.
